The John Vane – Ryszard Gryglewski Anglo-Polish Scientific Exchange 2025
About the fellowhip
The John Vane Academy in association with the William Harvey Research Foundation founded this brand new scheme of fellowhips and hopes to continue annually, with the aim to foster scientific collaboration between Polish and British research labs. The first round will support an early-career Polish researcher’s trip to the UK in 2025 with the deadline of applications till the end of December 2024.
The Polish Pharmacological Society will hold an application process to select the winning candidate. The successful applicant will spend three months gaining experience and learning techniques from researchers at the William Harvey Research Institute.

Dr Cristina Perez-Ternero, a recent addition to the lab as a lecturer, is interested in the relationship between metabolic disease and cardiovascular health. Another area that Cristina is exploring is vascular function and the regulation of blood pressure in Down’s Syndrome.

Candidates can also chose another lab at WHRI and provide in the attachment to the application the letter of support from a head of the other lab not listed above with a promise of accepting the candidate if fellowship is funded.
Who is eligible?
To enter this competition, you must:
- be a resident of Poland
- be an early-career researcher* AND
- be primarily involved in research within the area of endothelial biomedicine and vascular pharmacology.
* The JVA defines ‘early-career researchers’ as PhD students or postdoctoral scientists within five years of the award of their PhD or within eight years of their primary medical degree (exclusive of significant career breaks). Please note that PhD students will need to provide a statement of support from their supervisor confirming that this would not interfere with their completion and submission of their thesis. Candidates with longer academic track maximum 10 years after PhD can also apply, but the priority is given to early-career researcher

Budgetary matters – Total £10,050
What is included?
Travel
Return airfare and travel to and from the airport will be reimbursed, up to £400. Working visa, if required £150.
Accommodation
Accommodation at the university’s Academic Flats will be fully paid for during three-month stay. The flats are near the Mile End campus, approximately 35 minutes from the WHRI via bus or tube. Cost of accommodation for 3 months £7,500
Lab consumables
A grant of £2,000 will be provided to Principal Investigator(s) to support work in labs during visit. Please note that additional costs during your stay, e.g. meals and commuting, are not covered by this grant. We advise that you discuss your plans with your institute to determine whether your current stipend or salary will continue to be paid whilst you are away and that you will be able to afford these types of expenses.
